Rediscovering Chess

Thanks to a friend of mine from way back who invited me to play correspondence chess over at http://redhotpawn.com, I’m deep into a re-immersion in the game of Chess.

I know. I’m supposed to be learning and playing ‘Go‘, or something. It sounds fascinating, and I hope to begin learning it at some point, and I get the idea that it is potentially more difficult, more challenging, more [other adjective], than Chess. That’s awesome, but it’s really beside the point; Chess is still an extremely challenging game, one which I’m much more familiar with, and which I definitely have a long way to go before I’d even start to consider myself a skilled player.

So far some of my resources have been:

  • The 64 Commandments of Chess
  • Wikipedia (start with strategy, maybe; there’s not enough on Wikipedia to learn everything about chess strategy, but there is more than enough to start the ball rolling.
  • Re-reading Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. This has been on my shelf for years. I’m working my way through it again.

The aforementioned Chess website has been a great way to get my feet wet playing the game again; I have at least one friend locally who I know enjoys a game of Chess, and he’s considerably better than I am, which is perfect. I know enough about chess to know that one of the best ways to improve is to play against people who are better at it than you are.

If you play chess, please feel free to find me on Red Hot Pawn and challenge me to a game.

You're on. I haven't played chess in a year or so now, so I'm a bit rusty… but challenge sent, regardless :)

Wow, I haven't played in many many years… This looks like a good site, though, to randomly play while you're doing other stuff.

    We'll see how I do!
