I’ve grudgingly embraced the label “Web 2.0″ simply because there has been a shift in the way the web is being built on in the last few years, and Web 2.0 has become the term which de facto refers to this… so. Oh well. Choose your battles, as they say, and I’m not interested in arguing about the term and its meaning any more.
My opinion is that the next “big shift” in the way the web is used will not be called Web 3.0. We will have tired of the idea of versioning the web (especially since the www is… the same), and most likely there will be a new over-riding frame of reference — it won’t just be “web”, it will be some multi protocol, multimedia, interactive, cross platform, cross technology blurring between television, internet, telephony, radio, etc.
Calling it Web 3.0 is going to be like referring to a space shuttle as “horse and buggy 3.0″. I just don’t think it will fit.
