I’m pretty sure it’s over a month ago that I wrote a post officially abandoning the idea of writing a “niche” oriented blog, and giving myself permission to write not only about geeky/Linux/techie/coding/web topics, but spirituality, Christianity, or whatever.
Since that time, I think I have yet to write a single post which is spiritually oriented. So the question remains: why?
Ubertech suggested in a comment once that sometimes those things almost seem too personal. I can identify with that, but at the same time, I would like to write more about spiritual topics… for whatever reason, it still seems not to fit.
I think that I’ve written this blog into niche in my own mind, and while I wouldn’t say it has a “brand” per se, I’ve branded it in my own mind to being “about” certain things… to the point that I can’t bring myself to post about other things. They just don’t seem to fit.
To top that off, I find that most (though not all) of the blogs that I read and enjoy are “niche” blogs. Blogs which write to a niche topic or market are accessible for precisely that reason; if they are consistently well done and well written, you can revisit or subscribe without hesitation because you are confident that they will continue to be interesting. If you have no idea what the blogger will be talking about next, you might be more hesitant to make that site a regular stop… after all, you only have so much time, and you aren’t going to want to waste it if you aren’t sure you’ll be interested in reading it.
My plan is to mull this over for awhile longer. I am not sure if I will start a second blog, give the “one blog fits all” strategy another chance, or some other option which I haven’t even contemplated yet. I do plan to redesign the blog, possibly with a completely custom template (we’ll see). The URL may change, but I will be sure to give plenty of notice. If you are one who reads this via RSS or bookmarks, stay tuned for a change later this month.
Once again, thanks for reading. Stay tuned, Space Rangers.
