According to OSNews.com, Linus refers people to KDE. Whatever; I feel the exact opposite way. I can’t stand the way KDE looks, and I’m not a huge fan of the way it works, either. To each his or her own, I guess.

I’m a Gnome user as well. I was a KDE user for years till I tried Gnome. KDE is way too cluttered and confusing. You can tweak nearly anything, but most people (including me) don’t really need or want to tweak much of the stuff KDE allows. Finding stuff in the menus can be a bear.
In addition, I agree that Gnome is more attractive - though I do think the default icon theme could use some updating.
KDE wins in the eye candy department, but I’m more interested in usability than bling.
But to each his own…
Yes! The default theme needs a big update. That is almost always one of the first things I change.
I like Red Hat’s icons, myself — they are simple, not so weird that they’re distracting, and they look very sharp.
Fortunately, in Gentoo, this is as simple as running “emerge redhat-artwork” and then changing your theme preferences once it’s installed. I think the Red Hat art is available in apt, as well (though there are certainly other nice icon sets, as well.)
