Newsflash: Church Marketing Sucks

As an employee of a large church and an amatuer afficionado of business and marketing concepts, I guess it was only a matter of time before I wrote about churchmarketingsucks.com.

I like the concept of what it seems like they’re trying to do; their tagline is "Frustrate. Educate. Motivate."  Great, I suppose. Of course, you can’t please everyone, and I certainly found a lot of ideas that I didn’t care for…

For one there was this t-shirt.  Here’s the text from some church’s t-shirt:

our church invitation
:

We Suck…

We have nothing to offer…

We don’t know anything…

We are just a small group of people

in a small room trying to discover

more about God…

Come be confused with us…

What! "Come be confused with us?" Okay, it’s one thing to decide not to be arrogant and elitist; that’s great. If you ask me this is a whole step in the opposite direction.  Who wants to go somewhere to church where their whole paradigm is "We have no answers!"  Of course, the person who posted this does point out that he, also, disagrees with the spirit of this particular effort.

Anyways, as you can see, there’s plenty of interesting stuff on this site; plenty which could provoke thoughts and discussion, and perhaps help churches to market themselves better. If you’re interested in either church or marketing, definitely an… interesting… site.  Probably everyone could find things both to agree and disagree with, here, and I suppose that’s their point; to provoke. In that respect, certainly a successful site.
